The tobacco industry’s claim that it has not misled the American public is ludicrous. By weaving a web of deceit, Big Tobacco provoked a national health crisis and must be held accountable. It’s clear tobacco companies intentionally defrauded consumers with the marketing of so-called light and low-tar cigarettes and increased their risk for heart disease, stroke and other chronic illnesses. The health hazards associated with smoking have been well-documented – about 440,000 Americans die each year of smoking-related illnesses. The U.S. District court’s ruling must be upheld and stronger penalties must be imposed to stop the industry from further wrongdoing. We urge the appeals court to support penalties that include industry funding of programs to help people quit and prevent youth from smoking their first cigarette.
